Jan Martin Smørdal - Répétitions I & II (2021)
For flute and 2-channel addcoder
In Répétitions I & II, the flutist plays through an addcoder, a specially designed recording device, developed by the composer and realized by Mads Kjeldgaard and Erik Blekesaune at the Norwegian Centre for Art and Technology (NOTAM). The addcoder allows sound to be simultaneously recorded, amplified, and played back through two speakers. In this work, the performer re-interprets the sound that emerges from the addcoder, extending or shortening what she hears. We hear the first recording, then the new one. This process happens repeatedly—always the same way, always slightly different. The listener slowly experiences the shaping, or emergence, of an audible sculpture, an object with depth, and a continuously evolving feeling of familiarity.
